Research Internships 2023

Over the last months, our lab was fortunate to host seven research interns.  The interns contributed to research projects led by our researchers, examining ethical considerations related to topics ranging from AI and gene editing to digital biomarkers, drug pricing, and genomic testing.

Aiming to gain first insights into bioethics and translational research, their work illuminated the ethical dilemmas and opportunities inherent in these emerging fields, paving the way for responsible and impactful advancements. Beyond their individual projects, our interns also engaged in the vibrant ecosystem of our research lab. During weekly journal club sesssions, they discussed research articles relevant to their topics. They also actively participated in lab events, creating a dynamic atmosphere.

The exchange between our interns and our established researchers has been mutually enriching. Our interns brought a fresh perspective, a strong interest in ethical considerations, and an eagerness to learn. In return, they gained invaluable mentorship, honed their analytical skills, and deepened their understanding of the practical aspects of research.

For bachelor students in Human Medicine at ETH Zurich, the Translational Research Internship lasts six weeks and is the final step for bachelor students before they transfer to pursue their master’s degrees at a partner university. Through this internship, students gain insights into the transfer “from bench to bedside” – the translation of research findings into clinical application – and prepare for their master theses.

For students in the Master Programme Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich, the research internship lasts 12 weeks and is intended for the students to gain experience in independent scientific work. It is a mandatory part of the master curriculum and usually precedes the master thesis.
