Synthetic Socio-technical Systems and the Challenges of Deepfakes
ETHix Series Recap: Prof. Federica Russo from Utrecht University discussed how generative AI reshapes human-AI interactions and redefines socio-technical systems.

In last week's Ethix Series talk, Prof. Federica Russo from Utrecht University presented her latest research to our group about synthetic socio-technical systems and the challenges of deepfakes.
Drawing on collaborative work from the EU-funded SOLARIS project, she introduced the concept of synthetic socio-technical systems to highlight an important change in artificial and human agent interaction. Federica explained how generative AI is a technology we interact with, using the concept of "poiêsis" from the philosophy of information to discuss broader implications for policy-making and the role of media.
