Reproductive autonomy in light of advancements in prenatal genomic testing
ETHix Series Recap: Prof Ainsley Newson from The University of Sydney
On May 28th, we were pleased to host Professor Ainsley Newson from the University of Sydney for an in-person ETHix talk on Reproductive Autonomy in the light of emerging advancements in prenatal genomic testing.
Professor Newson highlighted how the increasing integration of genomic testing into prenatal care challenges traditional ideas of reproductive autonomy. These ideas, often framed in individualistic terms, tend to focus on expanding choice and providing information, assuming that information transfer alone ensures autonomy. However, as Professor Newson explained, this perspective often falls short, overlooking the broader structural factors that shape or limit reproductive choices. Drawing on the TARGeT research project, Professor Newson examined how healthcare providers and parents navigate these emerging complexities. She proposed a reimagined approach to autonomy that considers the ethical and structural challenges presented by genomics.
